Private company, not a government agency. Paperwork-only legal marriages are conducted by Josh Withers, an authorised civil marriage celebrant, not a courthouse or BDM Registry office. Book directly when ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a wedding ceremony?

No. This is a short legal marriage service. No aisle, no personal ceremony, no styled event, and no full wedding production.

Are you the government registry or a courthouse?

No. Melbourne Marriage Office is a private company operated by Josh Withers, an authorised civil marriage celebrant. It is not Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria, the Victorian Marriage Registry, a courthouse, a court, or a government agency.

What is the first step?

Use the booking link, fill out the booking form, and pay the fee. That starts the paperwork-only marriage process. You do not need to enquire first.

When is our date actually confirmed?

Your date, time, and place are confirmed after we receive your NOIM and supporting paperwork, and once we know what availability we have after the notice period.

How far ahead do we need to do the NOIM?

The NOIM must usually be received at least one month before the marriage and no more than 18 months before it, unless a shortening of time is approved.

Who can get married in Melbourne?

Most adults can get married in Melbourne if they meet the basic legal requirements. See who can get married in Melbourne and our marriage equality guide for the plain-English version.

Can you help with the NOIM?

Yes. Start by preparing it with NOIM Easy, then use our NOIM help if you need support.

Can the NOIM be witnessed remotely?

The law allows NOIM witnessing in person or remotely by audio and video, but the authorised witness still has to be the right kind of witness for where you are signing.

Can we get married online?

No. The marriage itself must happen in person, with the celebrant physically present and two witnesses present. Read why you cannot get married online in Melbourne.

Do we need two witnesses?

Yes. You need two witnesses aged 18 or over. If you do not have them, ask about our witness service.

Can we bring guests?

This service is designed for a simple legal marriage, not a guest-focused ceremony. Keep it small and practical.

What if we want vows, rings, and a full ceremony?

That is a different kind of service. For a full wedding ceremony, see Melbourne celebrant Josh Withers. For an elopement package with photography and a bouquet, see The Elopement Collective.

Can you help with a prenup?

No. We handle the marriage paperwork, not legal advice about assets, finances, or relationship agreements. Start with our prenuptial agreement note and speak with an independent lawyer.

Can a friend become our celebrant?

For most couples, the simplest option is to do the legal marriage with an authorised celebrant and let your friend lead a later celebration. If they want the professional pathway, read how to become an authorised marriage celebrant.

When do we get our marriage certificate?

You receive the Commonwealth Form 15 certificate on the day. The official Victorian marriage certificate is ordered separately through Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria after registration.
